Australia's wine regions

The first vineyards were planted in Australia in late 1700, and during the 1800s, wine regions of Australia began to be established. However, it is only recently that the country has been recognized as a leader in producing world class wines. Nowadays the fourth largest exporter of wine in the world, Australia has identified and secured his place in the global market for wine production. The success enjoyed by wine producers of Australia can contribute to a system that was launched in 1993 by the law of Australia known as the Wine and Brandy Corporation Act. This event helped establish the wine regions regions of Australia and gave the legitimacy they deserve.

There are approximately 62 designated wine regions and more than 1,000 wineries across Australia. These regions comprise about 420 000 hectares. Under the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation Act, geographical indicators were created to regulate processes of Australia's wine production. There are approximately 103 geographic indicators and these indicators are applicable to wine producing areas, regions and subregions. Not only are these geographical indicators important to wine production, but also play an important role in local and global marketing of wine produced in Australia. Such as land, soil and climate along with other factors play an integral role in determining the flavor and aroma of wine, this system regulates the production of wine helps ensure regional identity of the wines remains unchanged and pure.

Australia is divided into zones of wines, regions and subregions. A zone is simply an area of land, such as New South Wales. A region is defined as being distinct from the surrounding regions, and a sub-region is defined as being distinct from the region where you are. The requirements to be met to qualify as a wine region or subregion includes having a number of independently owned vineyards of a particular number of hectares with a specific amount of grapes produced annually. These requirements are part of the Corporation Australian Wine and Brandy Act.

The Australia's wine regions are: New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. There are several regions within each of these areas and include regions such as: Hunter Valley (New South Wales), Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and Eden Valley (South Australia) Granite Belt (Queensland) Pipers River (Tasmania) Yarra Valley, Valleys of the Alps, Grampians (Victoria) Swan Valley, Margaret River (Western Australia). An example of a sub-region within a region includes Hunter Lower and Upper Hunter in the Hunter Valley. Much of the wine produced comes from the southern regions of Australia. Overall, more wine is produced in warmer climates, but produced high quality wines in cooler climates.

Many varieties of wines are produced in Australia, and the type of wine produced is specific to a region. By example, the Barossa Valley is well known for its Shiraz, Merlot, Riesling and Semillon varieties. Hunter Valley is known for its Semillon, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Verdelho, while Yarra Valley which produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon.
