I have a Sony 46 "XBR3 but have been dying to upgrate at least 60." So when I see Samsung has two 65 "res in their 2010 line up (the 6500 and not yet published-in-this time-8500), I knew I have to get one of them now.
First a few disclaimers on my decision to purchase:
1. I just want to buy a LED LCD Sony and Samsung - is a personal thing. No plasma or LCD TVs scheduled / projector. So there is not many options
2. Ideally would that I had bought a local dimming LED LCD, as it will the best contrast / darkness level. But it is not available for 60 "+ and I do not I see on the horizon for the next 18 months.
3. I hang the TV on the wall and use only the TV screen only. So all the other bells and whistles in the sound - I do not care and do not review here
4. while in 3D can be cool, I think it is too exaggerated and not worth another $ 500-1K 8500. Also I have the TV for 6500 is now!
5. This purchase is an "upgrade" to my 46 "Sony XBR3, which was a decent supermodel 3-4 years ago. I also bought a Samsung 46 "b650 LCD last year, so some of my remarks will inevitably be compared with these TVs.
Pros:
1. Aesthetics. A 1.2 "thick, this unit is super slick, especially if you hang on the wall - great visual value to the family room. Seeing the one hand, bright actually makes the unit looks more elegant.
2. Image quality is not bad, when you can overlook some issues of uniformity in bright solid color scenes (See my cons). No opacity / flash light issues in dark scenes that are common with some LCD TVs. Excellent contrast and viewing angle terms, I see no significant degradation, even beyond 45 degrees.
Cons:
1. IMO there is only one makes it larger than a 3.5 stars instead of five stars The TV has some problems of consistency (vertical stripes and different colored lines).
