With the advent and popularity of HDTVs over the last decade, there have been many progress made in the players trying to install and use the high resolution offered by HDTV. One of these events was the ability of 'Expansion' of the standard DVD player, allowing the DVD player to perform much better with high definition television produce superior image quality.
But now that Blu-ray players are on the scene, how efficient are these players, "upscaling" DVD? Some may be confused as to what to buy and which device is best? What is the difference between scaling standard DVD and Blu-ray?
The answer comes down to the output resolution.
The everyday, standard DVD player can be found in most homes has a resolution video output at 480i (720x480), that is, without scaling, of course. A DVD player can produce progressive scan video output resolution 480p (720x480).
Most HDTVs have the ability to display video resolutions up to 720p (1280x720) - 1080p (1920x1080). (Remember 1080 is the highest resolution video.) So you can see clearly that only a DVD player that does not get the full benefit of HDTV. What the DVD scaling function is not mathematically the number of pixels in the output format to the DVD signal to the amount of pixels on an HDTV definition. The resulting effect produces a superior image shows better suited to your HDTV.
But while the scaling method makes a very good extension of the pixel output of a DVD to match the pixel resolution of HDTV, you can not convert a standard DVD in real high definition images images. What DVD scaling is achieved mostly smooth the edges of images, but provides no details extra for them.
Some points to remember:
* 480i: 720 pixels per line, which has 480 horizontal lines displayed alternately. In other words, interlaced scanning all the odd lines are displayed, then followed by all the even lines.
* 480p: 720 pixels per line, which has 480 horizontal lines progressive scan that uses each line displayed following another. Progressive scan is the best because it produces a smoother video that has a clearer picture, especially in fast moving scenes.
* 720: 1280 pixels per line, which has 720 lines Horizontal - displayed through progressive scan - each line displayed following another. (720 HDTV)
* 1080i: 1,920 pixels per line is 1080 horizontal lines - which appear alternately. Interlaced Scanning - all the odd lines are displayed, then followed by all lines pairs. (HDTV 1080i)
* 1080: 1920 pixels per horizontal line is 1,080 lines - which appear progressively. Progressive Scan - Each line displayed following another. (TV 1080p High Definition / Blu-ray Disc)
In conclusion, it can only get high-definition images using a Blu-ray and Blu-ray. Improve the resolution of a DVD will look a little soft blandish compared with a Blu-ray. When it comes colors like red and blue, the difference is very noticeable. DVD scaling tend to remove the details, while a Blu-ray these details are very sharp and clear. DVD scaling produces a very good similarity to the HD experience, but to actually get the best HD experience is necessary to have a player Blu-ray (with a Blu-ray) connected to your HDTV via an Hdmi Cable.
