Samsung DVD-HD950

The Samsung DVD -HD950 is part of a new wave of players DVD using a digital HDMI connection and upconversion technology to provide better video quality on their HDTVs and DVI-HDMI-equipped. While HDMI can make a big difference in picture quality, upconversion benefits are more subtle. Unfortunately, there is the picture quality HD950 a little disappointing, probably greater than the benefits of upconversion. Despite the problems of image quality, the HD950 offers a solid selection of functions and costs less than competing models such as the Sony DVP-NS975V and Panasonic DV S77S.

The included remote control does not have a backlight, but we found it fairly easy to navigate. It has dedicated buttons for many advanced features such as HDMI output resolution and output video. The Samsung offers more features than most players in its class. It includes an aspect ratio control that can resize 16:9 and 4:3 content in several ways. That's a big blessing for users whose HDTVs do not allow control of aspect ratio of HDTV or HDMI sources.

Other notable features include a DVD-Audio and SACD decoding - even if you do not care about these audio formats with high resolution, you can save some money with the silver DVD-HD850, which lacks support DVD-A and SACD, but is otherwise identical. The high point of connectivity options is the HDMI output HD950, Samsung and supplies both a HDMI-HDMI and HDMI to DVI cable the player. Other products for each component video, S-Video and composite video, two for digital audio (optical and coaxial) and one each for analog stereo and multichannel audio. As mentioned earlier, the player can upconvert via its HDMI output, which means that can scale DVD resolution (852x480) 1,024 x 768 (also known as 768p), 1,280 X720 (720p) or 1920 x1, 080 (1080i). In our tests, the DVD-HD950 image quality produced relatively disappointing compared to other upconverting players we've reviewed. His worst crime was a resolution rather mild, producing a blurred image the Sony DVP-NS975, and several tests revealed a softer, less detailed picture at all resolutions out with two HDMI and component outputs. Resolution Avia Pro test and Silicon Image HQV HD950 revealed that there were problems to display all 480 lines of horizontal resolution. Further testing with Digital Video Essentials Pro is less conclusive. During the initial round of tests, the Samsung clearly failed all tests of resolution, but tests revealed some secondary peculiar behavior. For example, the player does not pass the test first resolution and pass the second test, but when we returned to the first test, it would pass. In other words, their performance was less consistent than the Sony or Upconverting Dvd player we've tested.

The Sony DVD player also beat to Samsung in many other tests of the Silicon Image HQV suite. For example, an imaging test on the roller coaster did not play smoothly, resulting in what appeared as dropped frames and stuttering visible as the roller coaster took the stage. Different cadence tests, which measure how a player handles the standard rates framework, it also seemed smoother on the Sony.

The Samsung DVD-HD950 performed admirably in other tests, however. For example, did not show chroma error in testing Windows Test Annex DVD, and 2:03 down detection successfully rendered the opening sequence in Star Trek: Insurrection without show significant jaggies on the hulls of ships. A text crawl from the HQV suite on the Sony was combed and none in the Samsung. And to be fair, the differences between the two units were more difficult to detect using actual movies, so less critical viewers may not notice the difference. Note that all previous tests were carried out via HDMI by Philips 42PF9630A plasma, a Vizio plasma P50HDM, and our reference Sony KD-34XBR960 CRT through resolutions of 1080i and 720p. Interestingly, Samsung's the option of 768p, which is ideal for the Philips 1024 x 768, was not available in our sample for review.

disc compatibility is to HD950 very good, choking in just a few old, badly mastered DVDs. It handled DVD-R/RW and DVD + R / RW and can play DVDs with MP3s on them. The HD950 can also play both DVD-Audio and SACD audio formats with high resolution. While not as versatile as the Pioneer DV-588A, it happened as close as possible for a player without the support of DivX. Note note that while the images on-line products HD950 display a logo in the DivX player, our test unit did not have the logo and could not play DivX files.

Overall, the Samsung DVD-HD950 is not the best performing DVD player upscaling we've tested, but their ability to perform DVD-A and SACD will appeal to fans and videophiles do not want to splurge on a high-end universal DVD player HDMI.
