Steven asks…

Redecorating the kids' playroom, any ideas?!?

We have a bathroom, a guest room, home theater and another big area in the basement. We use the big area for a TV/game system room as well as play room with all the kids toys and crafts. It's currently painted a pale green colour with white carpeting. We want to keep the carpets, but re-paint the walls a friendlier colour. We're also looking for storage ideas that are convenient. We currently have boxes labeled all over the basement and before bed all the toys have to go in the designated boxes. I was thinking of buying several of these "rope totes"

and labeling the front with words and pictures and having the kids put everything in there. We also have a mini table set up in the corner of the play area with play doh, paints and crayons... and it usually gets all over the place and I'm wondering how we can minimize mess there. We want to get this done ASAP, because I'm expecting our fifth in November and I don't want to be very pregnant while painting and shopping for furniture....

We're also planning to sell all the old and broken toys (along with our "spring garage sale" and all the clothes that don't fit).

Ted answers:

The idea of the rope totes is good and if you like you could have one wall painted with black board paint

this way the kids can draw and wipe it off just like at school , white carpet may look nice but not with kids , you could purchase one of those mats that look like puzzled pieces I think that it's foam and place that over most of the area where the kids will be playing on .

About the toys you could sort them out and trow the broken ones out and bring the rest to a shelter or the hospital for the children to play .

Helen asks…

My mom is confusing, I don't get it?

So, my dad was talking with my mom, Saying he was in the one who came up with the idea to have a home theater in our house, My mom asked me if I remembered shopping for furniture, I hate causing a stir, I just said "I remember going to a store" than my dad asked me if I heard him say anything about his dream about the home theater, I said yes.. and later on my mom says "Stay the hell out of my conversation"
No, hardly actually

Ted answers:

She was hoping that you would support her side of the argument and when you were unable to do so, that upset her. It's a terrible way to treat one's child, but not really very confusing at all.

Next time when you perceive that your mom (or your dad for that matter) is trying to use you in such a way, simply decline to participate. Say that it would be more mature, respectful, and better parenting for them to work their problem out on their own and not put you in the middle of it.

David asks…

Preppy teen room ideas?

I might be getting my room re-done in the winter, it is a fairly big room and I am planning on getting a wooden floor (it goes with everyone, and its amazingg to practice dance on!) and white furniture.

Help! I'm counting on my beauty/style chicas <3
I was thinking a light green (not neon) for the walls, and then little green things hee and there....and I'll somehow find faux flowers that match the room. Gorg? Any other ideas? I want it to be something that my friends will go home and be like "Dam, now THATS the coolest room ever". Not literatly, but you gety the point! Maybe even a fire-engine red room? I need a stylish, preppy teen room, that will be AMAZING.

I do NOT want different colored walls. Also, no black walls!!!

Things I like:
Hollister
Abercrombie
Coach
Dancing
Acting
Singing
Theatre
The beach
Beauty&Style (duh!)
Summer

Thats all I can think of right now, lol.

Ted answers:

Um... I would go with the classic girly theme. Too beachy is so cliche but I think you should incorporate those colors into it like that really pretty sunsetty orange and all the other colors of the sunset. WOod floors or the fake wood venyl could be lide sand and I would do a different color on every wall but do accents all over the room so they blend well. Just make sure they do not hurt your eyes. You should do really elaborate bedding(because that is how a princess must sleep) and a super funky lamp. Do really subtle but interesting accent pieces that match your fave things like some shells, hollister or abercrombie bags, or really cool pics of like people on stage. Maybe you could dedicate like one wall for frinds and get a bunch of funky frames and put em all over.

Donna asks…

Question about the positioning of speakers?

My parents are setting up a home theater system and asked for my help. Only I know a ton about video, and not so much with audio.

The room with the TV is not very big, and has furniture in it that would block sound from some directions if the speakers were on the floor. They went to Best Buy to ask questions (a bad idea if you ask me,) and they saw speakers that they could put in the ceiling. I mean literally in the ceiling with nothing protruding. I would think this would not be a good idea, but I have no clue. Our ceilings are about 10 ft high. It seems like there wouldn't be much directionality to the sound. They said they seemed to sound fine at Best Buy, but I'm sure anything would sound fine at Best Buy; their rooms are probably finely acoustically tuned.

I guess the two other options would be speakers that are sunk into the wall, or speakers that hang from the ceiling. What would be the best option?

Also, what brand would you recommend? They have been subsisting on TV speakers, so I'm sure anything would sound better to them, I just don't want them to pay all this money for an inferior setup.

Ted answers:

Well im a big fan of panasonic, no matter what make model size or shape they have always seemed to impress me,

my friend has speakers in the ceiling of their living room and walls with an external subwoofer,
for an incredable surround-sound experience you could follow that idea, it really wouldnt really matter about wall or ceiling, what would matter more is the wattage on the speakers and if they will be installed properlly, i would have to see the room myself to reccoment how strong the speakers and amp would have to be
so just ring one of the main retail stors and ask for a quote about it

but depending on how crouded the room is, the placement of speakers should not be a problem, even just a simple sony or panasonic home thetre system should fit any house perfectly witch has all kinds of features for your tv.

Hope it helped lol
