Home Theater Questions About Home Theater Electronics

Helen asks…
Is Newegg a good site to buy home theater electronics?
I see their prices are really good. Maybe too good. are they reputable and have good service?
Thank You

Ted answers:
NewEgg has a VERY good reputation on the internet, and I personally have had nothing but good luck with them.
They ship the next day, they pack well, and should something go wrong their customer support is easy to deal with as well.
I have nothing bad to say about NewEgg.

Sharon asks…
I'm looking for a job in home theater/electronics in CT. Any suggestions on where to begin?
I'll admit right away that I am still a novice when it comes to electronics, but I've been developing an obsession the past couple years and believe it could be a great career move. I am always setting up TV's and sound systems for friends and family as well as advising them on what to buy. I figure why not try to make this a living and actually be happy at work? I have no professional training, experience, or certifications. I am willing to take courses and invest money, even start off with a not so glamorous job. My goal would be to either get into installation or consulting. Either way, I'd love to become an expert in home theater. I just don't know where to go or what to do to start things off. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks.
Great responses so far. I'll try finding businesses around here and see if I could get an entry-level position. Is there no experience required for most places to start? I'm also a bit concerned of what the pay may be to start.

Ted answers:
I am a THX Level II Installer. And first I would like to welcome you to are family of custom Installer.
I started out in a very similar way. I think you will make a very good installer.
There use to be a home theater Boot Camp at EHX (Electronic Home Expo), But they didn't host one at the last show. It would have been a great start.
Look up and try to find a good Home theater company in your area. Not a small company but one with at least two install teams, They always need someone to pull wires. You'll have to work hard that first year. But you'll learn more about wiring in the first two weeks then you learn in the last year. And you'll be happy you did.
Ask questions. Take a ISF,THX,HAA or any class you can find.
But again... Welcome to the club!
Edit: DO NOT TRAIN AT BEST BUY OR CIRCUIT CITY.
Their entire methodology is wrong. If you ever do go to work for a company that actually cares about their clients and the quality of their work, you will have to unlearn everything you know and start from the beginning again.
Edir 2: They might start you out at a low starting pay grade. But they notice the installer who get's the job done. I start new guys at $12.00 an hour. I have a few making $30.00 + an hour.
If the installer is worth it they get more. I don't know what the starting pay is in Connecticut... But it can't be much lower.
Let me know how it works out for you.

Betty asks…

Alright, I have the Sony DAVHDX277WC theater system and i cant get it to work with all of my electronics. I have hooked up the DVD player that came with it to the speakers and the surround sound only works for DVD s. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could tell me how I can get the surround sound to work for everything.
My other electronic are a Phillips Lcd Hdtv, a sony playstation 3, a wii, and an xbox360.

Ted answers:
You need to buy a receiver if there are no audio inputs on the back of your theater system.

Ted answers:
Haupphaugue.com (pronounced hop hog) makes a device that sounds something like what you may want. You said "Wireless" so i don't know but their system can use an ethernet network. I believe. Their tech department seem helpful so you could also call their helpline. MediaMVP-HD-Model 1340. It's on the right side of their main page. It's a fairly new product.

David asks…
How to connect home theater system?
I bought an Rca Theater system at Walmart and I am having a problem connecting it to my TV, DVD/VCR and my satelite box, the instructions are confusing to me, I am not too expirienced with home electronics. The model # RT 2870. Thanks

Ted answers:
It is really pretty simple, but some of the terminology is what confuses most people. So the first thing to do is familarize yourself with the different names of the connections. HDMI, component video, S-video, and composite video, optical audio, coaxial audio, and simple analog audio (plain old red and white RCA jacks). You can google these phrases or use google image to see pictures of what they look like. Then look at the back of each of your pieces of equipment and make a itemized list of the connections you have to work with.
Again, you can do a simple google search and find all sorts of guides and such for this on the internet.
