What is HDMI decoder?

I thinking about getting the Sony Muteki home theater system, but I read online that the amplifier only act as an HDMI switch not a decoder. Does it matter, what does this mean? well, I'll be able to connect a blue-ray player for the receiver? Can you give an example which is not compatible with HDMI decoding.

It means you can only pass through HDMI. It may not be able to make audio HDMI input and decode it.
