How do I upgrade my home theater system?

My home theater system sounds like shit. I have entry level DVD player and receiver A / V. The image is fine, but the sound is real metal. I have a couple of Bose 201S and a subwoofer (decent speakers). Any ideas? Should I invest in a better DVD player or a better receiver A / V?

Change the DVD player will not help. Unless your A / V is very bad, that is unlikely to help anyone. The normal response is "new speakers", as they have the most significant effect on its sound. However, with 201 (not a bad bookshelf speaker despite rampant and often deserved the anti-Bose sentiment here) and a sub, the last thing is the sound should be "metallic." I suspect you need to look to change some settings to ensure that your current configuration has been optimized before you start changing things. If you can provide more details about your receiver (brand / Type / model) and the subwoofer (type and method of connection) the more specific advice could be possible. Meanwhile, here are some things to check: - Make sure that you understand and set up your bass management correctly. How is your sub connected? Is there a variable crossover and tried to change those settings?
