How do they relate to the impedance of sound quality in home audio speakers?
I am in need of new speakers for my theater system new home, however, as technology savy as myself, the speakers are not my forte. I stay current speakers are 8 ohm, 150 W, pressure 91 dB acoustics, with a range of 36Hz-22kHz. Onkyo AV is melting. I need a good pair of slim-line speakers, and I found some I like but I'm not sure of how they compare with my current set. Can somone please explain to me which of these statistics should be lower and to be more optimal sound quality. Thanks!
You want your speakers to handle the power output of your system, so you'll need at least 150W speakers. The 91 dB sound pressure is an indication efficiency of the speakers. Superior is more efficient, lower is less efficient. Remember that dB is logarithmic so a change of 3 dB is a factor of 2 (88 dB using power twice as loud as 91 dB speakers). A key specification in the frequency range is left out, and that is the change from one frequency to another - ie, + / - 3 dB. Ideally, you want + / - 0 dB for all frequencies that sound the same with the same energy input, but that's not going to happen, so most specification of how close they come to the ideal. A speaker with + / - 0.5 dB across the frequency range of sound much more accurate than one that is + / - 3 dB (remember that 3 dB is a factor of 2). The wider, flat (+ / - 0 dB) the frequency range, the better. Impedance itself usually does not relate to sound quality, simply match the preferences of the amplifier for best results. But remember that the specifications are the manufacturer's specifications, without independently certified technical specifications. You would do well to consult the audio magazines review their test results on the speakers you're thinking instead of believing specifications manufacturer's technical. They are not perfect either, but will probably be more objective than the OEM.
