Has anyone ever heard of Digital Audio Brand Speakers for a home entertainment center?

Posted in Home Theater Questions by Ted on June 5, 2010 2 Comments

I know it sounds weird, but the brand logo on the speakers are Digital Audio. It is not stating that they are digital audio, it is the actual brand. I have never seen anything like them before and would like to know if I got ripped off or if I got a good deal on them. HELP!!

You don’t say how much you paid for them, but you probably got ripped off.

“Digital Audio” is one of the dozens of brands of speakers that are sold as “white van speakers,” a well known scam technique.

I don’t know if this is how you bought your speakers, but the “white van” scheme involves some guy selling speakers out of a white commercial van, usually with some corporate logo on the side. The van is parked in a parking lot somewhere, and the salesman, dressed as a deliveryman, accosts passersby, claiming that there was some kind of delivery mixup and that he can sell these speakers for a fraction of their actual cost. They often have a brochure or even a website claiming that the speakers are high-end.

From what I have heard, the speakers actually do make sound, so they are not totally worthless. But they are very low quality, and certainly not “high-end.” Even those cheap home-theater-in-a-box setups perform better. The sad thing is if you are unhappy, there is no handy retail store to return to. (Supposedly they offer a return policy, but only for a few days.) Strictly speaking, what they are doing might not even be illegal.

I recall some audio websites had standing banners warning people to stay away from the white vans.

So if you got taken in by that scheme, I am sorry. There is probably little you can do about it.

On the other hand, audio tastes vary, and it is possible you could be very happy with your speakers. If you like how they sound, and if you paid a reasonable price, then what’s the harm?

If you don’t like the sound, then probably all you can do is save up for better speakers. If it helps, the best sound you can get for the money is from headphones. I like the Sennheiser 580’s (at about $200) and some “canalphones” (not earbuds; canalphones actually go into the ear canal) from Etymotics and Shure. You can shop for them here (not necessarily the absolute lowest prices, but great customer service and very informative reviews. They have been around for years.
