How do I get my PC to recognize the 4 USB ports on my Brilliance 200p monitor?

I have a Phillips "Brilliance 200P" 20" flat screen monitor. It has 4 USB port connections on the lower left hand side of the screen, 2 are on the side and 2 are on the rear.

When I plug my USB flash drive into any of the 4 ports, my PC does not see the inserted usb flash drive hardware. Basically, the "new hardware found" popup never appears and when I use Windows Explorer and select "My Computer" the flash drive is never shown.

***********

I am able to use any of the USB ports that are directly on my PC without any problem.

Details: I'm using an HP Compaq pc with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor on a Windoes XP Professional ver 5.1, service pack 2 operating system platform.

Probably a stupid question, but are you using a cable to connect the hub to a USB on the PC base unit? Not the monitor cable - a USB cable.
