Pragramming Linux?

I am interested in building a computer as a multimedia machine type, 7.1 audio, DVD player, DV-I, sort of thing. I do not want necissarily office, or in fact, 90% of the trash of others coming in the windows, really just the Media Player and a tuner program Good TV. If someone has used a GP2X, and seen that it is operating system Linux, which is basically what I'm looking for something simple. Is it possible to use an operating system GP2X on a desktop PC? My schedule might be a bit much for me, are there other possibilities that have not come up with, like other Linux distributions or am I stuck with the windows?
