I can make a DVD with my DVD writer teams will play in a DVD player connected to a TV?

I have a Dell laptop with a unit DVD + ReWritable. I want to be able to download movies from my digital Video Camera, edit them using Microsoft Movie Maker, and then write the movie a DVD-R and played on a normal DVD player. I was able to download the movie and Eidt correctly, but cannot seem to transfer it to DVD. The program only allows burn to a CD at a rate a bit it doesn't offer the best quality. I can save the movie on my laptop using the best quality you can (I think it creates a. avi) and then copy it to a DVD. My DVD player doesn't recognize it. Is this possible and if so how? Thanks
