Can anyone explain the difference between Dolby Digital EX * DD2, DDS, etc?

I mean, like .... if my unit can only make the old 5.1 dolby digital ... DD2 is useless? Or do I get surround sound?

Conclusion: If you have around you now with even more formats recent. That said, there are some things worth knowing. Take a deep breath .... They are surrounded by many different audio formats. See the link for a tutorial. In general, the audio is "coded" for the storage of a DVD (or Blu-ray discs), then "decoded" by a "codec" built into the player or amplifier / receiver. DVDs usually include a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track (although other variations are permitted) and may contain a DTS track (DTS is a different way of "encoding" the audio). Blu-ray discs in general, use other advanced audio formats. Audio surround sound is designed to be played with five or more speakers (in addition to one or more subwoofers to very low frequencies). This is defined through the "shorthand" notation of 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 (where the first number is the # of surround sound speakers, and the number after the "." (usually a "1") refers to the number of low-frequency channels (or subwoofers, while the definition of physical speakers.) Audio surround sound can be "discreet" or "womb." Discrete surround sound (eg Dolby Digital 5.1 (DD), or Dolby Digital EX (DD ES)) codes for the various tracks as "discrete" information. Matrix surround sound (eg Dolby ProLogic) is created from fewer tracks (eg, stereo) by manipulating the differences in the signals to create a pseudo surround. While it is preferable to discrete surround, the matrix is a convenient way to get a degree surround sound experience from stereo or to extend Sound 5.1 to 7.1 (or other) multi-channel sound. sound formats encoded discs vary not only in the way it is coded, but in the quality of information (Eg if the sound is compressed or lossless and if the compressed bit rate) and the number of information channels (eg, 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1).
