Depeche Mode is well known for being one of the eighties’ most influential bands in rock. The group’s twenty years in the music industry have also helped Depeche Mode win many awards, with Q Magazine tagging them as one of the most popular electronic rock bands in history, and The Sunday Telegraph naming them as one of the best UK pop bands of all time. This iconic band has accumulated fans far and wide, with some of them achieving rockstar status themselves, such as Fear Factory, Pet Shop Boys, The Killers, A-Ha!, Crystal Method, and Shakira remaining ardent fans to this day.
Many of Depeche Mode’s best known albums have frequently hit the top spot in the European music charts, as well as charts in the USA and the UK – they have close to fifty songs that rose in the UK Singles Charts. Recording giant EMI has calculated that the band has sold more than a hundred million albums all over the globe, turning them into the most prolific and highly successful electronic rock act in all history. Essex’s Basildon birthed this seminal electronic band in 1980, with Martin Gore, vocalist Dave Gahan, and Vince Clarke as the core members. Alan Wilder took the rein for keyboards and the drums when Clarke separated from the group shortly after the debut album Speak and Spell was released in 1981.
The band’s groundbreaking sampling techniques, among other famed weapons in their audio arsenal, built their electronic rock and pop amalgamation into what it is today. These techniques pervasive in the Violator album served as the Pet Shop Boys’ inspiration during the brainstorming process for Behaviour, a similarly acclaimed collection of songs from PSB. The ‘Boys’ Chris Lowe used DM’s Violator as a yardstick, narrating how much it had “raised the stakes” for them, and many other musicians of the time.
Fear Factory’s industrial metal soundscape was also partly due to Depeche Mode’s songs, with FF drummer Raymond Herrera citing DM’s moody tunes (and the speed-thrash tracks from metal gods Slayer) as a significant part of his musical roots. Darren Smith of Funeral for a Friend also said that his band’s post-industrial/punk tunes were partly a product of listening to the electronic band from the eighties.
It may surprise many of the genre and band’s followers that Shakira is a fan – Woman Full of Grace, her biography, testified to her love for Depeche Mode music from her early teenaged years.
As you would probably expect with a band that has reached the status of Depeche Mode there is plenty of music clothing to get to show your allegiance. Depeche Mode shirts are particularly popular. Perhaps Shakira has one or more?
