From Tape To Disc To Bluray - The Evolution Of Home Video
Home video recording devices have been around since the seventies, when people used to record their favourite TV shows on to their Video Cassette Recorders (VCR) for viewing later, although it was certainly a limited use you no longer had to worry about missing one show because another show was on at the same time. Later these devices became programmable so that you didn't have to be around to press record.
This meant people could go out to dinner or socialising safe in the knowledge that the film or TV show was available for watching when they came back home. During the late 90s a new technology surfaced, the Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) which allowed us to record and watch videos at a much higher quality for both sound and vision. These discs included easy to use menus, optional subtitles and different languages as well as the biggest feature: additional content.
This additional content could be a making of documentary or deleted scenes, movie buffs were now spoilt for choice as many movies they know and love were released with this wealth of additional features. DVDs managed to progress to a better double capacity disc (Dual Layered DVDs) which not only allowed for all this additional content but the picture quality was not compromised and many films were able to be presented in different audio languages as well as subtitles.
In the mid 2000's yet again the ever changing world of technology brought us two competing formats: HD-DVD and BluRay. BluRay eventually won due to a greater storage space and integration with the modern video games console/home entertainment machine the Playstation 3. Again, a jump in the quality of picture as well as sound was brought about with BluRays with movies now presented in High Definition which many people have bought fresh new TVs to enjoy.
Home Videos have certainly come a long way since the days of cassettes and having to rewind them to get back to the beginning. Even now updates are being made to the BluRay format to add extra functions such as being able to connect to the internet or download extra content, helped along by the rise of the internet too.
With many DVD players going for very cheap prices these days as well as the more expensive and impressive BluRay players we can now get the full cinematic experience in the comfort of our own homes.
