HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray: The Great Optical Disc Battle

Gone are the days when all we had were compact discs, first for music, then for data storage and movies. The DVD that came after, boasting of what then seemed like tons of storage.

But as they say, times are changing rapidly and so does technology. Personal and commercial demands for data storage - whether for music, movies, games or software - are outstripping the existing capacity of optical discs.

Fortunately, two new players in the storage Optical scene have come - HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. They share similarities, and at the same time, compete against each other to become the new standard technology for the future. The final match will determine the successor to DVD. While it may seem a blessing for consumers to have two types of discs to choose from, the battle between the two discs can be disastrous for the industry.

HD-DVD

HD-DVD represents either high density digital versatile disc or HD Disc Digital Video. The look of the HD-DVD is a family - that is 120 mm in diameter, the same size as a CD and DVD. A single-sided HD-DVD can hold 15 GB of storage, while Double-sided that one can store 30 GB. A triple on the side of HD-DVD, courtesy of a great opportunity to Toshiba, you can store 45 GB.

HD-DVD use the interactive CI format, which allows interactive content to be written to the disks.

Blu-Ray

Blu-Ray laser takes its name used - a wavelength of 405 nm blue laser, which is also used by the HD-DVD. A Blu-ray disc single sided, which shares the same diameter with the HD-DVD, CD and DVD, you can store 25 GB of storage, while a double-sided can store 50 GB.

In return for the CI format HD-DVD's interactive Blu-ray uses the HDMV, and support for deploying Java software interactive menus.

Factors that goes to the HD-DVD:

The DVD Forum is the big daddy.

The movie industry, which counts among its ranks to Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, New Line Cinema and Paramount Pictures, support the format.

The giants of the IT industry - Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, the DVD Forum, Microsoft and Intel - also support the format.

All HD-DVD and HD-DVD is compatible with previous versions, which means that DVDs will continue to support old.

It's cheaper and faster to manufacture that Blu-Ray.

Factors that go for the Blu-Ray:

Blu-Ray has the support of major electronic companies world - Sony, HP, Dell, Pioneer, Philips, Panasonic, Samsung, Apple, LG-Electronics, and Mitsubishi Electric.

There are also companies in the entertainment industry supporting the format - Electronic Arts, MGM, Walt Disney and 20th Century Fox

The PlayStation 3 will support Blu-Ray discs.

Blu-Ray has Data transfer rates faster than their counterparts.

Blu-Ray disks have more storage capacity than their counterparts.

As you can see, each side has its advantages and disadvantages. It's really hard to call right now as to who will win. But one thing is certain - the commercial industry dismisses this battle of attrition, like any other format war has the potential to divide the market into two incompatible sub-markets, these smaller markets means that the format war kills income.
