CIM Blue-Ray vs. HD-DVD?

Both formats have similar specs. I went to my local hardware store and asked them to perform the same movie "Underworld", while systems Blue-Ray and HD DVD. The two are very similar in 1080p HD Plasma TV, but Blue-Ray looks a little clearer and sharper. If the two formats are so similar, then what's the point of having two different? I mean when the DVD came out was clear that it will replace the old VHS, but these two are difficult to count. Can someone please tell how to tell the difference and choose the best one quality? 2.
