I bought a blue ray player, etc-free region, but not region free. PAL DVDs only in black and white. My TV is new and PAL and NTSC, as well as my DVD player is connected and others worked in the past.

If you are thinking of spending $ 150 - $ 200 on a Blu-ray player from Sony, LG, Samsung, etc. .. and have rejected this player because its nearly $ 300 and has the features of Internet --- please stop and reconsider. My experience is that the Oppo players just work better and have better video quality than anything else near this price - especially when regular DVD game. You will not regret. This player is worth the additional $ 100. If you want Netflix picks up a Roku box. This is my second Oppo (also own 981 - Had a couple of years still works great, looks great and plays almost any disc regardless of condition). Oppo own and several friends and feel the same.
He had previously blu ray player from LG (model 370) worked well at first: 1) Good quality blue-ray video, 2) Flowing Internet worked, but was not as good / smooth as the Xbox or Roku, 3) Good speed 4) DVD playback is not poor (not even close to my Oppo 981), 5) terrible distance. Started having problems - not read the latest blu ray discs (disk error message) and a 90 day warranty expired. After several unanswered Customer service gave up LG. LG did not do firmware updates after that my player had broken - seems to expect the consumer simply buy a new player every year or two. I learned my lesson, and returned to Oppo. Its a great relief now to put in a disc (DVD or Blu Ray) and have to play without any problem and look great.
Consider the Oppo unit price increased but it was too high for me. Worried about the Oppo web site that does not look good on screen. After to play a few favorite albums (BR and DVD) realized how much it seemed better than the LG. DVD quality was as good as my Oppo 981 looked much better than the players Sony and Samsung also had property (all died). I am very happy. Hope this helps.

Love, love, love! This is my first and only Blu-ray player. I waited for the right team to come around. I was interested primarily in this capacity units play SACD my "legacy" and DVD-A collection of over HDMI, and it does just that like a champ! This unit is the driving force in my films Dedicated home. It is the source for a 100 "screen 1080p and 7.2 audio system. Load Blu-ray faster than any other I've seen it also, to my surprise, Oppo unit sees my network attached storage devices without having to install and play just about anything stored on them, even 1080p MKV files. However, they seem to have a bit confused by my larger music collection. More 160gigs. Perhaps a firmware update to fix that.
Speaking of firmware, then Divi installing, I turned and immediately phoned home on the Internet and found a firmware update. Very clever!
Regarding the build quality, I have not seen a consumer electronic component is firmly embedded in a long, long time. I work in the Pro Audio / Live sound field, and even some of the gear I use daily is not as solidly built!
All in all, so far I love it. I chose the BDP-80 over the 83, as a transport for me. I did not need the high-end analog processing which offers 83. All that makes my Onkyo receiver through HDMI, the Onkyo Fajoudja has a good chip in it that is responsible for scaling better than the BDP-80 (to my eyes at least). Thus, this drive is the bill, both in features and price.
