A simple DIY project – make your own TV stand

Building a wooden TV stand is a easy and satisfying do-it-yourself project that can be completed in two or three hours.The only building skills you need to complete this project are the ability to accurately read a measuring tape and a level and to use a drill and a screwdriver.
Alright, if you've got everything ready, then let's get started:
Style
Determine the size of your wooden TV stand based on the size of your TV and the available space in the room.Flat-screen TVs can stand on a much more narrow space than older televisions, but you'll still need room to place peripheral equipment like a DVR or gaming system.Most TV units have at least one horizontal shelf, but its very straightforward to add two vertical shelves, meaning you don't have to build a stand that's too wide. .
Once you have your overall dimensions and design, you can have the wood cut to size for you at the time of purchase. It's important to remember that as the shelving will sit inside the legs of the unit, and the top shelf must be large enough to fit over the top of the legs, get your shelf piece cut large enough to cover the diameter of the each table leg.
Selecting the wood
Select hardwoods to build your TV stand if you plan to stain it, or you can build the stand from MDF or paint-grade plywood if a painted stand best fits your décor.For stands that measure up to 2 feet wide, you can use 3/4- to 2-inch thick plywood for the shelving with no braces beneath. However, for units wider than 2 feet wide then you'll need to add braces to the shelves with metal brackets or wood slats to prevent bowing over time. Around every 14 to 22 inches across the width of the stand should be suitable support.
You'll also need four table legs that you can purchase ready-made at your home improvement store andfour L brackets for each shelf on your stand.The only materials required to construct the stand are some wood screws, measuring tape, spirit level, drill and small drill bit and screw driver.Remember to pick up medium- and light-grade sandpaper, stain or primer and paint for finishing your TV stand.
Building your unit
Start by inserting the braces to the legs (if you need to), and do this using your wood screws.Anytime you're inserting screws into wood, it's a good idea to drill pilot holes so the screws go in easier and straighter.Once the braces have been prepared, add the "L" brackets onto the table legs, at the top and at any point that you wish to add a shelf, ensuring the brackets are evenly spaced on each leg.
When you start to fix the brackets position them as required, add spots for the screw positions, drill the pilot hole and put the screws in place.Once your brackets are all attached, begin with the bottom shelf and attach it to the brackets.Work your way up the TV stand, attaching the shelves to the L brackets, making sure each one is level before moving on to the next.
Sand the wood tv cabinetwith first medium and then light-grade sandpaper before you stain or paint.
